Building a Farmhouse Style Kitchen Table

Last year, I decided I needed a larger kitchen table for a few reasons. For one, this house doesn’t have a formal dining room and I needed more space than our 4 person round table when entertaining and also because this is a pretty big kitchen and I needed a larger scale table to fill the room.
I knew what kind of style that I wanted (a big old family style table) and I also knew they are expensive. So rather than buying a table, we decided to build one ourselves.

Here are the basics of how we built it:
We went and picked out 7 pine boards. The table is 41/2 feet wide by 6 feet long.
My husband laid them out on the ground in the store to make sure they were all straight and flat. This also allowed us to see and to set up the pattern of boards that I liked.





We used four 5 1/2 x 6 boards and three 9×6 boards for the top, plus several 3×6 boards for underneath.
After sanding down all the planks (which is really the hardest, most time consuming part) my husband braced them together and added the side apron with the smaller pieces.

For the final step, we added legs that we also bought at Home Depot for $15 each.











And that’s it. A pretty easy weekend project that saved a ton of money!
