How To Decorate Pegboard

I love pegboard! I think it is the best organization tool ever! It can be used in so many spaces for storing tools, sewing supplies, office supplies, gardening tools, and pretty much anything else that's small enough to be hung from a board.

The only problem with it is that it doesn't look very good...especially if you go for the economical brown kind that you get in a big sheet from the hardware store...not as much of an issue if it's in the garage storing tools, but I don't want to look at that brown board in my office or craft room.

My solution? Wallpaper! You don't need very much of it (so it's not very expensive), it comes in all kinds of pretty colors and patterns, it's very easy to install, and takes way less time than painting the board (you don't have to wait for it to dry).

The first step is to cut the pegboard to size. I love using a cordless circular saw for this. It has plenty of power for this job, is easy to cut in a straight line and you don't have to worry about having an electrical plug handy.
I'll admit that I'm a lazy wallpaper installer, so I try to cut the pegboard smaller than the width of the wallpaper...that way there's no wallpaper matching to do. If I need a bigger pegboard area, I'll just cut more than one board. And I have found that actually gives me more flexibility with how and where to hang the boards.

Simply cut the wallpaper to a size that's a little bigger than your board, brush some wallpaper paste onto the back of the wallpaper and glue it on to the board.

Then fold the overhang over the back of the board and staple it. This keeps the wallpaper in place. Use a nail to punch holes through the wallpaper where you want to put pegs and you are ready to hang the board!

You can use store-bought peg accessories or make your own. These pen containers are actually aluminum cans (that used to have canned tomatoes in them). I covered them with wallpaper, drilled a hole in the back and used a hook to hang them on the board.

The see-through containers with lids are actually food storage containers. They came as part of a set that I bought for the kitchen but I have never used them because they were too small. They are perfect for storing small items such as paper clips, or nails. Similar to the cans...drill a hole in the back and hang with a hook on the pegboard. They have tight-fitting lids that keep things from falling out and since they're plastic, you don't have to worry about glass breaking if someone accidentally dropped one.
