After purchasing our 1972 French Country fixer upper a little over a year ago, we have been going room by room and remodeling from floor to ceiling. The second room that we renovated, after the kitchen, was the family room. The family room was very outdated, with turquoise painted walls and old blue carpeting. It was dark and dingy.
One of the nice features was this large brick fireplace, but the single bookcase built in at the side made the entire wall a little off balance.
This is what the family room looks like today, after the renovation. Carpet is gone and in it's place is wide plank, hand scraped, oak hardwood floors. New crown moulding, and the walls are painted a beautiful gray.
We painted the red brick on the fireplace and added trim to the mantle.
We also added more moulding to the tops of the doorways to extend them and give the appearance of taller ceilings.
We reworked the single bookcase by the fireplace, cutting the top section off and moving it down to extend the entire length of the opening, and added shelves and cabinet doors. To see more photos, details, and source list, come visit us at our blog!
